Manhattan Center for Dermatology

Acne doesn’t have to be a part of your life. There are many effective treatments offered by medical dermatologists to reduce the appearance of acne. Your dermatologist at Manhattan Center for Dermatology will examine your skin and go over treatment options with you.

The best acne treatments succeed in the following:

  • Banish pimples
  • Keep pimples from forming
  • Have minimal side effects
  • Produces no scarring

You dermatologist has several options when prescribing or suggesting acne treatments. You may need to take a pill, or you may simply put a special cream on your skin. The type of acne treatment you receive is typically based on how severe your acne is. Here is a list of the common medications you may want to try with your doctor’s advice:

  • Benzoyl peroxide solutions
  • Retinoid Creams or oral retinoids
  • Oral or topical antibiotics

Benzoyl Peroxide

Benzoyl peroxide kills the bacteria that causes acne, and bacteria are not resistant to this substance. Be aware that your skin will be more irritated if you use a treatment that is highly concentrated with benzoyl peroxide.

Retinoids

Topical retinoids are made of vitamin A, and they can be used long-term. If you decide to use topical retinoids to treat your acne, then you must be prepared for skin irritation in the first weeks of use.

Oral Retinoids

Oral retinoids treat the most severe cases of acne. Be warned that you should not become pregnant while taking this medication, and you should use a reliable method of birth control while taking oral retinoids. You and your doctor must register in an iPledge program that ensures that these risks have been discussed.

Antibiotic creams

Topical antibiotics kill bacteria as well. They can also reduce inflammation. However, bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics will not be affected by topical creams. Because of this, antibiotics are used along with other treatments.

Oral Antibiotics

Oral antibiotics work much like topical antibiotics, except they are taken in the form of a pill. Oral antibiotics are utilized for more severe forms of acne.

Your doctor will assist you in finding the right treatment for your skin. If you just can’t get rid of your acne, consider contacting Manhattan Center for Dermatology and setting up an initial consultation. We are conveniently located in the heart of Manhattan, as well as in Scarsdale.
